2021 Sweat Dreams

Many people and stories lead me to Phil Lovett. Walking in his vineyard is tough for me and in his old age he struggles even on more certain ground. I slip and fall several times while looking at different blocks. Not bad enough to take me all the way down to the lake that the vineyard drops off into. Looking out across Clear Lake from the vineyard takes me to a different part of the world, somewhere on the cover of a National Geographic issue. The slippery slope I’m precariously standing on brings me back. Each year there seems to a be a rolled tractor during harvest or some other slant induced mishap. Its not for the feint of heart. 

On this steep north facing slope is an acre of Vermentino. We only got about 1 ton off of it in 2021. Direct pressed and fermented in stainless. A bit was blended into the 2021 Fizzical(White) and the rest aged in barrel for two years. I wound up not working with the vineyard again after this vintage. It was too far away for me to keep an eye on and a sketchy haul over the mountains with grapes. But I think about how I felt something special out there, and I hope you can feel it here. I think I’ve found some similarly intriguing terrain producing powerful white wines a bit closer to home. You will just have to wait a bit til they are ready for the world.
