David Rothschild is a good friend and quickly becoming recognized as the new viticulture talent in Sonoma Valley. Always pushing for better quality above and below ground. Sheep graze the vineyards. No tilling. Cover crops are crimped to form a composting mat which keeps water and cooler temperatures in the soil. This site he farms on Sonoma Mountain looks east across the valley and as your gaze shifts south you can see the San Pablo bay. This is a more powerful and solar site. Classic California where ripe fruit reigns.
Direct pressed and fermented in tank before transferring to neutral puncheons. The wine never went fully dry, so I pressed it over the skins of some Sauvignon Blanc from 2023 and then put it back in puncheon for a second year.
Really exuberant and exciting wine. Aromatics fly out of the glass. Even though it spent only 3 days on Sauvignon skins, the varieties aromatic signature is front and center. Citrus and tropical. Gooseberry margherita. I love smelling this wine.
As always the unexpected and unintended can lead to some true beauty if we can be patient and gently steer the wines.
