2022 Scales and Arpeggios
The last vintage of the first wine I ever made from the Santa Cruz Mountains. A special little plot of Sangiovese planted in the wrong place that did all of the right things.

Planted at 2600ft in the Santa Cruz MOuntains about 25 years ago. This block of Sangiovese was destined to be ripped out and replanted because they could never get it ripe. The site was too cold. It turned into my first farming project and after changing the pruning and canopy management, its been a pretty stellar fruit source. Regrettably, this may be the last vintage of this wine. The price keeps going up each year. Other people have been trying to buy it behind my back. I don’t feel like I can trust the grower. And I’m growing up. As special as this site and wine is, I think its important for me to focus on my own vineyard projects and the work of my grower friends that I really believe in.
We wait as long as possible to pick. Always the last pick of the year. Whole cluster into tank for long maceration. As long as we can wait until we are tired of harvest and want it to be over. In barrel for a year. The day of pressing, a woman that wanted to do an art project on the vibrational energies of music and dance on food and wine came to stomp some of the grapes while wearing a wedding dress. A drone flitted around the cellar. She told me later that her photographer stole the photo and video and so she had nothing to show for it. I think this is a real memory.
