2021 Plastic Stars and Paper Moons

I’ve wanted to macerate this Viognier every year, but due to smoke in 2020, I didnt and it wound up being one of my favorite white wines. Really kind of fancy. One of those wines that you can pour for your parents. Esther wrote about it in the chronicle as being one of those rare natural wines free of ‘flaws’ whatever those are… This year I was hoping to get enough to make a direct pressed and a macerated version but I was given way less than my contracted amount, so I stuck with what I knew and loved. 

The vineyard: Cooper Garrod is on the north side of the Santa Cruz Mountains below Mount Eden and over the town of Saratoga. The Viognier was planted about 20 years ago. Its historically been dry farmed and always organic, but was given a bit of water this year for the first time since planting. They operate horse stables as well, and their vines receive homemade compost.
The wine: in 2020 it was all fermented in tank and then put into barrel to age. This year there was a mix of stainless and barrel fermentation. Much more flavor and ripeness in the skins due to the drought than I saw last year and it came in slightly riper but still has great(if not better) acid. This is fancy white wine. Oppulent. Jazmine and white tea. Orange marmalade and saffron creamsicle. Rocking and rolling right now, but I suspect could be beautiful years down the road. Honestly one of the best white wines I’ve made

Note: since releasing this wine back in July or something, some of the bottles have developed a slight spritz. Feel free to drink it as a beautiful frizzante or decant to splash out the fizz and enjoy it still
