Since I moved to California in 2018, I’ve wanted to make sparkling red. I wasnt allowed to make any petnat in 2018, and then logistics and vintages didnt allow it in 19 or 20. But the stars were finally aligned in 2021. In Auvergne at l’Egrappille, we made these lightly fizzy reds from Gamay(Ca and 109) that I was enthralled with and thats what I was channeling.
The Vineyards: Pinot from Bob’s vineyard just outside of corralitos in the eastern and lower reaches of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Close to the ocean with more fog influence. I farmed this with Bob. Minimally irrigated due to drought last year. No tilling. organic.
Syrah from my frend Dave Rothschild’s Quatro Esquinas vineyard in Sonoma. Originally planted by Phil Coturri. Many great winemakers have worked with this site including Tony Coturri. As part of Dave’s rehab program, vineyards are disced for two years(alternating rows) in order to break up compaction and get compost and cover crop worked in. After that, they are untilled,and grasses are managed with a roller crimper, creating a matt that traps moisture and cooler temperatures in the soil.
Syrah from the airport block of Poor Ranch in Hopland. Dry farmed and organic always. Super low yields.
The Wine: 60% of the wine is direct pressed pinot rose from Bob’s vineyard. The rest is a balance of Syrah from Dave and the Poors. Bottled at 1brix and disgorged in late February. Low fizz like my petnats tend to be and actually disgorged so you dont have to worry about losing half of your bottle. It smells and drinks very much like a light pinot on opening, but then the syrah starts to come though with blackberry and smoked meat. Really delicious adult soda vibes. My favorite petnat that I’ve made for sure.
