When everything is on fire and you are forced to only make pink and a small amount of white wine, you quickly gain a bunch of rose-making experience. In 2020 Dreams came from my Summit Pinot vineyard, but the 2021 is coming from the vines I was taking care of in Corralitos, a cooler and more coastal site. Fruit conditions kind of forced this.

The Vineyard: Bob Biggs bought this property when he retired. There was an avocado orchard that was mostly killed off in a bad frost year, and he decided that vines were going to be his retirement ‘hobby’(dont do this. Its not smart). Super kind and wanting everything to be as healthy and organic and natural as possible. He was kind of just doing the best he could but really struggling with powdery mildew until we met in 2020. Together we really dialed the canopy management and spray program in. the vines sit atop a knoll that is just barely high enough to be included in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA with a view of the bay and the Moss Landing towers on the horizon. No tilling. The vines are still very young so they havent been weaned off of irrigation yet, and last year was definitely not the year to attempt that. Organic since day 1.

The wine: There was a bad outbreak of mealybugs at the vineyard… I thought we had it under control when we were getting the nets on and mendocino fruit was starting to come in, but by the time the grapes in santa cruz was ripening the fruit was essentially rotting on the vines. There was no way to sort it. It was so hot and miserable picking that day. Probably the worst day of my winemaking/grapegrowing career. I cried. Thanks to everyone that helped out.

We brought the grapes into the winery and dumped all the juice sitting at the bottom of the bins, dumped the free run juice, and only just barely pressed the grapes. We then cold settled for two days and dumped healthy lees over the juice to try to precipitate out bad bacterias. The wines was then racked to a new tank to ferment, but we then realized there was more disgusting sediment at the bottom so we racked cleanly to a new tank before fermenting… at the end of the day we got 60% of the wine we should have… but its clean… and really good. It tastes like blanc de noir champagne without bubbles. Honestly the proudest I am of my winemaking ‘techniques’ and am still blown away by this miracle wine
