I have no idea what I’m doing. Sometimes there is a rough plan for some grapes and the wine actually winds up following that path closely, but more often than not, the wine just does its own thing which this wine definitely did, surprising me in a great way.
The Vineyard: Syrah from the Poor Ranch(Upper or what Avi and I call the Airport block due to being planted along a long abandoned landing strip). The poors have been farming this property for a few generations now. They have a very specific style of farming that works for their specific growing conditions. Nothing is irrigated ever. They have their own nursery and plant and graft everything themselves. It is a hot mountainous area east and over Hopland. Everything is head trained and very low yield. Typically under 2 tons to the acre. Always organic. Things ripen very quickly here and getting grapes picked when you want, doesnt really happen.
The Wine: Because of the fires in 2020 I didnt make red wine. By the end of harvest I was getting pretty tired of just directly pressing grapes for rose, so I took a small risk with this fruit. It was carbonic for 6 or 7 days and then pressed. I had to press longer and harder than I’d have liked due to the thick and hard skins of the grapes from these low yielding vines in a hot sunny region. It fermented in barrel for over a year and was finally settled and finished after about 19 months in barrel. This is a super distinctive wine. Through its aging I was always excited about it even though I didn’t really know where it was going. It looks like a super dark rosato or lightly extracted dark grape with a tinge of brick color from the long elevage. Really rich and aromatic. Cherry chapstick, thin mints, flat coke. I havent had something like this before but damn its delicious.
