2020 Scales and Arpeggios

Sangiovese planted at 2500ft elevation in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Dry farmed(except for the spot where the water from an homemade hot tub sometimes runs off), no till, beyond organic.

This vineyard was very close to the fires in Santa Cruz, so we had to pick it earlier than I’d normally like to do. Direct pressed very gently to avoid smoke taint. The grapes smelled like BBQ while being pressed. Cold settled over night to let some ash fall out. Fermented and aged in barrels without topping for a year.

The wine has very little color and could be mistaken for a white wine. The acid, concentration, and tightrope of oxygen with pleasant reduction might make you think of a Jura white.
