2023 Relief in Ambiguity
Pinot from the Santa Cruz Mountains. Planted by Gerhard a little more than 20 years ago. I’ve had the pleasure of taking care of the site since 2020. exploding fruit that lingers brooding. Batman villain energy.

2Planted by Gerhard in 1999/2000 at 1700-1800ft over the Monterey Bay in the Santa Cruz Mountains on sandstone and shale. I started farming the site in 2020. Everything done by hand. No tractor. No tilling. A place of power and beauty. The steep sandy slopes are lapped by the moist ocean mists rushing up the mountains.
2023 was a longer and cooler growing season and harvest. Scheduling picks was very easy as ripening was very spread out, instead of everything getting ripe at the same time which happened in 2024. The cool and wet season produced a bit of botrytis and some powdery for us to sort through, but I think we did a good job. This cuvee is from the top of the south block below Gerhard’s house. The first vines to ripen out there.
Whole Clusters with juice pressed on top. Infused for 4 weeks. This wine is very very loud. It grabs attention with its juicy acid and crunchy candied fruit. Think cool kid Jura or Bojo.
Probably my favorite of my attempts with flotaison. I’m using this method less and less now and am torn about whether I like it for Pinot and/or this site. I love this wine, but I always wonder if I should have done something different.
This was the first Pinot of 2023 bottled and meant to be the first released. Something accessible and immediately generous with more fermentory vitality trapped in the glass. I think it brings some lightness to balance the density of the following two red wines.
nothing added or removed. no sulfur. not contract or custom crush.
